LUV Blog

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are proud to honor our very own Founder, Emma Thornton, as our LUV Woman of the Month.  Since beating breast cancer four years ago, Emma has dedicated her life to holistic health and wellness, and it was her cancer journey that led to the creation of LUV.

Originally from England, Emma now lives on the West Coast of the US.  We caught up with Emma to talk about self-care, self-love and her fight against breast cancer.

How do you identify yourself?

I’m an entrepreneur, mom, fitness fanatic, health and nutrition guide, cancer survivor & coach.

What’s your greatest accomplishment? What are you most proud of?

My two daughters. Also, beating stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer four years ago.

How do you express love to others?

I love taking time to connect and talk with friends.  Ideally, it’s during a walk or something active. I really enjoy going paddle boarding with my girlfriends.  It’s a wonderful time to connect, share stories, catch up and appreciate nature together. One of the most rewarding things about surviving cancer is that women regularly reach out to me, asking for help and support.  Being there for them is the greatest honor I could ever hope for.

It's not easy to love yourself in today’s world... what would you say has been your greatest obstacle to self-love? In other words, what’s the false narrative you tell yourself that keeps you small?

I have a huge amount of drive that keeps me going, but also stops me from taking a second to look back and appreciate how far we have come.  I’m always on the go, but have to be really mindful to take time to stop, rest and breathe. We all have moments of self-doubt, and it’s easy to question ourselves.  As I get older, I’ve found that I’m able to balance my decision-making better, and have faith in my experience as well as my instinct. I’ve also worked hard to create a network of incredible women, and we are able to ask each other for support when we need it.  Women supporting women.

How has that narrative kept you from your greatness?

I think as women, we try to juggle so many things.  Letting go of perfection, and focusing on progress was a great unlock for me.  Showing vulnerability, and being able to ask for help has also helped.

How did you overcome that voice?

With the support of great mentors and coaches.  Positive mantras, the love of my family / friends, sports as well as strong female role models.  I was lucky at Nike to meet so many incredible female athletes, like Ibtihaj Muhammad, Serena Williams, Simone Biles and Chloe Kim, who have all inspired and motivated me by breaking down barriers, challenging conventions and working so hard to achieve greatness on the world stage.

What's your favorite self-love ritual?

I love my early morning workouts when the world is just waking up.  Ideally it’s a run or spin class followed by some yoga and an infra-red sauna.. but it has to be a really early morning to fit all of that in!

How do you stay fit and healthy? What are your top 3 tips?

I make sure that I do some form of exercise that makes me sweat every day, to get rid of toxins and to keep my lymph going. My top tips would be to try something new that restores and re-sets your system like infra-red saunas, cryotherapy or a hyperbaric oxygen chamber and to drink more green vegetable juices.

What impact do you hope to leave on the world?

I hope that through the LUV community, more women are inspired to commit to self-care and self-love.  By creating healthier women, I truly believe that we will create a healthier world that supports the next generation of young women, everywhere.

What 3 things would you tell your younger self?

Don't worry about what people think or be so hard on yourself.  Work hard. Believe in yourself, you can do anything. Focus on courage and kindness.  Never give up.
